Diamond Earrings & Bracelets Take the Oscars

The stars came out for their traditional red carpet walk Sunday night, donning their best, and sometimes worst, gowns and decked with their most dazzling jewellery. The hottest trend this year, apparent on several Hollywood beauties, was the combination of diamond earrings and bracelets.

Sandra Bullock, nominated for her role as leading lady in the movie The Blind Side, wowed the crowds with a gorgeous Marchesa gown, a delicate diamond line bracelet, and a classic pair of diamond drop earrings. Simple and elegant, her classic beauty showed through, especially as she accepted her Oscar on stage. Ironically, she told reporters that, unlike most celebrities who are wooed by top jewellery designers to display their goods for the evening, her diamond earrings and bracelets were Neil Lane pieces from her own private collection.

Director of the multi award winning drama, The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow, not only surprised audiences by becoming the first ever female director to take home an Oscar, she also amazed them with her timeless beauty and taste in jewellery. She chose a simple pair of white gold diamond stud earrings and matched them with a pear and round cut diamond bracelet.

As with most Oscar night trends, expect to find a much wider selection of diamond earrings and bracelets on the market than ever before as consumers strive to get those red carpet looks for themselves. Unlike other years when the million dollar diamond pieces hung on every earlobe, wrist, and neck and wrapped themselves around every finger, the simple diamond earring and bracelet combination took home the gold this year. Thankfully, with a move from flashy and bold back to sleek and sophisticated, this years jewellery trends are ones that people can actually afford to copy.

Oscar Jewellery predictions

When the words, Oscar Red Carpet are said, one of the first images that come to mind is fashion and jewellery.

Jewellery trends often vary on the red carpet ranging from classic white diamonds, to colourful gemstones or various forms of luxurious costume jewellery.

I think this year at the Oscars, as we normally see, its going to be lots of classic, old Hollywood glamour, predicts Francesca Ferrante from the Diamond Information Centre. Whether its big statement earrings or a couple of bracelets layered together, the diamonds are going to be substantial but still that simplistic beauty that we always see. Each year at the Oscars there is normally four hundred million dollars worth of diamond jewellery. Thats a lot of carats per star.

Last year colourful jewellery made a statement when Angelina Jolie wore a long black strapless Elie Saab gown with long green earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. This year, colour is back. Youll definitely see them on the red carpet in all forms dangling earrings, big bold rings, and button earrings.

One of the biggest trends we are going to see on the red carpet is colour. We have already seen quit a bit. We had Diane Kruger wearing Harry Winston at the SAG Screen Actors Guild Awards, said Lindsay Meyer from Building Communications. Colour really makes a piece pop. It can really add to any outfit. Celebrities have always been a fan of platinum. Platinum really brings out the colour. We will see a lot of blues a lot of greens. There are some great options available from KWIAT. They feature some amazing vintage designs with sapphire and ruby.

London Jewellery Week 2010 to go ahead

After fears that London Jewellery Week would be cancelled after headline sponsor Coutts pulled out, London Jewellery Week 2010 will go ahead after a consortium of jewellery associations has pulled together and secured leftover council funding.

The withdrawal of Coutts, which has sponsored the event for its first two years, forced organiser The Communication Group to pull out of the event also.

Rather than let the event end, a group consisting of the organisers of exhibition Treasure, the British Jewellers Association, the Green Street Jewellers Association and The Goldsmiths Company have formed a collective and have secured funding leftover for the third year of the event from the London Development Agency.

The budget of the event has dropped from about 700,000 last year to 160,000 and because of this the group will focus its attentions on four main events Treasure, The Goldsmiths Hall, the Hatton Garden Festival and the Green Street Festival.
