As Prince William and Catherine Middleton marry in Westminster Abbey it is revealed that sparkly engagement rings are still the most precious pieces of jewellery in most UK homes and are worth more than most people think.
Research reveals that the value of gold, silver and gems has risen by over 70% in the past 10 years. The price of white gold and platinum solitaire diamond rings is £850 higher than a decade ago, while eternity rings have risen by 136% to nearly £1,300.
For example, an 18ct white gold and platinum ring with a 0.5ct diamond would have cost £1,650 in 2001 but is now worth £2,499, an increase of 51%, according to the research from insurer Aviva.
While an 18ct white gold and platinum eternity ring set with gems costing £550 in 2001 is not worth £1,299, an increase in value of 136%.
