The Hong Kong real estate magnate Joseph Lau (rank 156, worth $6.3 billion) entered the world-class baubles Hall of Fame when he purchased this fancy, vivid blue diamond ring from Sotheby's in May 2009 for an eye-popping $9,448,754. The diamond, weighing 7.03 carats, had been unearthed the previous year at Petra Diamonds' Cullinan mine in South Africa. After a reported 15 minutes of hectic bidding, Lau set the world record for the highest price ever paid for a blue diamond.
