In a high-tech era, the notification came through a ringing cell phone, and what it told Stacy Hansen and Adam Sheppard was that they were about to walk away with a $14,000, 1.6-carat diamond ring.
A few minutes later, Hansen said she was still shaking.
“We’re a young couple in love, and this is insane,” she said.
The ring was the top prize in a scavenger hunt sponsored by Rasmussen Diamonds, 6220 Washington Ave., Mount Pleasant.
Hansen and Sheppard are both 25. She works at Coaster’s, Henry and Wanda’s and Pudgy’s Pub, all in the Racine area. He is a landscaper for Cream City Services in Milwaukee. They live Downtown, and Hansen said that probably helped. The scavenger hunt was based on clues related to various landmarks.
“We ride our bikes around this area all the time,” Hansen said. They know the places that were mentioned.
They didn’t practice for the hunt at all, she said, and had only heard about the contest through her sister a couple of weeks ago.
In answer to the obvious question, yes it will become her engagement ring at some point. Despite a serious amount of cajoling from the people gathered on the festival grounds after the hunt, Sheppard said he would wait for a private time.
You might have noticed other scavenger hunters lurking around. They were the people walking or biking around Downtown on Sunday morning wearing yellow T-shirts.
