A 55-year-old Bangor man was robbed of a 1.99-carat diamond ring this morning in Bethlehem Township, police said.
The man offered to sell the ring for $7,000 on the Web site craigslist last week. A man called about the ad, which stated that the ring is worth $32,850, and arranged to meet the seller at the Wachovia branch parking lot in Bethlehem Square shopping center on Route 191.
When the seller and would-be buyer met, the buyer allegedly grabbed the ring -- which features 42 diamonds and two sapphires -- then ran.
The man told the victim that his girlfriend was waiting at Wal-Mart and he planned to use the ring to propose to her, police said. He also told the victim he had a safe deposit box at the bank and the bank manager was going to secure cash for his transaction.
The victim, reached by cell phone this afternoon, said he and the buyer talked for about 45 minutes before the man asked to take a closer look at the ring.
