Now could be the perfect time for loved-up romeos to buy gold or platinum diamond rings, according to a source.

Thomas Mulier and Jean Chua, writing for Bloomberg, state that this could be the case as the price for these precious gemstone-encrusted pieces are at their lowest for five years.

According to the source, the cost of polished jewels has fallen by 31 per cent since August, which could open up opportunities for those looking to bag a bargain when purchasing gold diamond rings.

Katherine Huang, a US jeweller, tells the news provider that consumers are able to pick up discounted pieces, noting one instance in which she helped a couple choose an engagement ring with a larger stone than they thought they would be able to afford,

She advises: "Go for the larger stones, because the discount is greater."

Recently, the Jamaica Observer suggested that men becoming a little tight with their money may be a sign that they are saving for an engagement band.
