The jewellery industry can recover from the economic downturn by producing beautiful items such as diamond drop earrings and diamond necklaces, according to a source.
Students at the Indian Diamond Institute have come up with this as a solution to the country's problems in the sector, reports the Times of India.
According to the group, producing exquisite pieces will attract international markets.
KK Sharma, executive director of the body, told the newspaper that this may be the only way to tackle the downturn.
He said: "Only value addition can rescue the Surat diamond industry from the jaws of recession. The budding jewellery designers have the potential to change the face of the industry."
The comments came at an event at which the work of 120 students was exhibited, including pieces such as gold diamond rings and diamond bracelets.
