Consumers could be set to mark a major date in the calendar by purchasing diamonds rather than gold, according to a source.

Akshaye Tritiya is seen as an auspicious day for members of the Hindu faith to buy assets such as gold and silver, expressbuzz.com explains.

However, many people are instead turning to gemstones, as they are more affordable, lovers of items such as diamond bracelets and diamond drop earrings may be interested to hear.

Retailers are recommending jewel-encrusted pieces due to the rising price of commodities, the source adds.

Managing director of VNM Gold Ravi Nath Mohandas told the website: "Many customers opt for diamond jewellery set in platinum rather than in gold."

Analysts have recently predicted that the price of the precious material will be boosted by the Akshaye Tritiya festival.

The celebration is believed to bring success and good luck and is marked throughout India, with ventures began on this day thought to be prosperous.
