Items such as platinum diamond rings and diamond necklaces remain popular choices for Valentine's Day, according to the latest research.
A study by Blue Nile on US consumers found 89 per cent are planning to celebrate February 14th this year, with 62 per cent set to splash out on presents for their loved-one.
The research found 28 per cent of men stated jewellery is the gift they will be giving, while 22 per cent of women said it was exactly the kind of thing they would like to unwrap on Valentine's Day.
However, there may be some cutbacks due to the credit crunch, as only 12 per cent of participants are planning to spend more than they did last year.
Meanwhile, the research also indicated customer care in the industry could be improved, with 61 per cent of respondents claming they would be more likely to buy items such as gold diamond rings if the experience of jewellery shopping improved.
Elsewhere, a study by the World Gold Council found many women are hoping to unwrap gold items this year.
