Christie's has announced the 100-carat jewel, which sold for $48,487,500 HK (£4,268), is to be known from now on as the Shizuka Diamond.
The item, which is mounted in a glittering tiara, was purchased in a Hong Kong sale in May 2008, lovers of platinum diamond rings and diamond necklaces may be interested to hear.
According to the Christie's, the gem is one of the largest ever sold at auction in Asia.
In a statement, the company said: "The sale of this important gem in Hong Kong, rather than New York or Geneva, was a testament to the vibrant Asia market and the growing number of collectors in the region."
The firm added the jewel is brilliant in its cut and originated from a "daunting 460-carat rough".
