Britons purchasing gold diamond rings this Valentine's Day may wish to consider a break from the traditional cross-Atlantic wedding mecca.

While Las Vegas has long been revered as the kind of glitz and glam, New York is now stepping up to the plate in an attempt to see itself crowned as the premier matrimony destination.

First deputy mayor Patricia Harris told CBS News about the city's plans to become a major attraction for those receiving engagement bands.

She said: "We hope people will come from all over the world and that New York will become the wedding capital of the world."
