Romeos looking for the perfect engagement band may wish to consider "eco-aware" options, it has been suggested.
Cathy Wilson, writing for thepost.ohiou.edu, commented that there are ways of finding gold which are environmentally-friendly.
She stated there are plenty of jewellers who are able to supply such materials, adding thrifty couples could also do their bit for the eco-system.
Ms Wilson said it is possible to take old gold diamond rings to be melted down and recycled as an engagement or wedding band.
She added: "Another option is a vintage ring or reusing a ring that has been in the family. Going as far as Pamela and Tommy Lee by getting ring tattoos, however, is not something I'm ready to endorse."
In related news, numerous lucky high-profile stars have unwrapped sparkling gold or platinum diamond rings given to them by loved ones in recent weeks, including Coleen Rooney, Andrea Corr, Gisele Bundchen and Kristy Hinze.
