Tom Cruise has revealed he purchased an engagement ring for Katie Holmes after their first date, according to a source.

In news which may interest owners of gold diamond rings, the actor told the New York Times style magazine he purchased the jewel-encrusted band in 2005, adding he did not want to disappoint the former Dawson's Creek star.

He commented: "At one point, I thought she was going to ask me to marry her first and I put her off by changing the subject."
