A major jewellery institution has opened a new European base, it has been revealed.
The International Diamonds Laboratory (IDL) now has a site in the Italian city of Valenza.
Peter Meeus, chief executive officer for the company, commented that the country is one of the most important in the fashion and jewellery world.
He added the organisation's accreditations are already being used throughout Italy, but this new base will leave the IDL better placed to serve Europe.
Mr Meeus went on to say: "In the current economic scenario, the importance of certification becomes even more significant."
He suggested this is because consumers are cutting back on their spending, meaning retailers offering IDL-accredited products and services, such as gold diamond rings and diamond bracelets, may be able to cope better with the downturn than those who cannot supply such goods.
In related industry news, earlier this year, the Israel Diamond Exchange celebrated its 70th anniversary.
