A glittering jewel could smash all records when it goes on sale this week, it has been suggested.
Experts predict the 35.56-carat blue diamond could sell for a landmark fee at a Christie's auction on Wednesday [December 10th].
The gemstone, which could be used in items such as gold diamond rings, diamond drop earrings or diamond bracelets, is known as the Der Blaue Wittelsbacher and has a rich history.
King Philip IV presented the jewel to his daughter, Infanta Margrita Teresa, in the 17th century, a fact which experts believe could drive its price up to as much as £9 million.
Francois Curiel, chairman of Christie's Europe and international head of jewellery, commented: "It is a great honour and a lifetime dream to handle a museum-quality stone such as the Wittelsbach."
Earlier this month, several diamond items which once belonged to actress Deborah Kerr sold above their estimates at auction.
