Scientists 'turn Tequila Into Diamonds'

A group of scientists have uncovered a way of turning alcohol into diamonds, according to reports.

The Mexican workers claim latest tests show they are able to transform tequila into gem stones, states the Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Miguel Apatiga, one of the three researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico behind the study, told the AFP the find came about after experiments turning water into gems.

He said: "One day I went to the campus shop and bought a bottle of cheap tequila. I used it under the same experiment conditions as for a test with ethanol and water and obtained positive results."

The jewels cannot be used for items such as gold diamond rings or diamond drop earrings, however, as they are too small.

In other gem stone news, a line of diamond-encrusted mobile phones has sold out within days of going on sale, despite a price tag of around £83,000.
