The diamond ring does not necessarily have to lose out in the event of a broken engagement, it has been suggested.
According to the Jewellery Insider blog, people may wish to get their engagement ring reset into a diamond pendant if the wedding is no longer going ahead.
The blogger suggests: "Instead of selling your rings - take the pain and make it yours. Have the diamond re-set in a cocktail setting - after all if this doesn't call for some self-indulgence - what does?"
Views on what to do with redundant engagement rings differ, the post notes, with some people claiming they should be kept for posterity and others feeling they should be auctioned off, given away or reset into a diamond pendant.
A recent article by the National Jeweller Network suggested that people often invest diamond necklaces, bracelets or rings with meaning, depending on who bought them the item and when.
