Diamond stud earrings could be the Father's Day gift of choice next year, a new survey suggests.

A third of people surveyed by the Jewellery Consumer Opinion Council (JCOC) purchased a father's day present in 2008, with jewellery coming in second behind clothing in a list of the most popular gifts, reports Diamond Intelligence.

Liz Chatelain, president of MVI Marketing - of which the JCOC is a division - commented that jewellery and watches were tied for second place with power tools.

"More men seem to be requesting jewellery and watches from the females in their life and purchasing items like power tools for themselves," she said.

Gold diamond rings may also emerge as a popular father's day gift, with yellow gold named the preferred metal for fine jewellery and watches.

Father's Day in the UK is celebrated on the third Sunday in June each year, falling on June 21st in 2009.
