Jewellery items such as marquise cut diamond rings and diamond necklaces are still selling, a new report observes.
According to the Daily Mail, wealthy consumers are not letting discussions of an economic downturn quell their desire for gems and jewels.
Citing the 12th annual World Wealth Report, the newspaper reveals that jewellery is a particular enthusiasm of what it calls the "super rich".
Diamonds, particularly the coloured sort, were said to be high on the list of popular jewels, with a 6.04-carat emerald-cut blue diamond that recently sold for £600,000 per carat given as an example of this trend.
"Their spending is distinguished by the fact that they want their purchases to be unique," the newspaper says of the report.
In related news, a platinum diamond ring recently became the most expensive item ever to be auctioned by the US Marshals Service when it sold for $1.7 million (£863,000) last week, Cleveland.com reported.
