The worth of an engagement ring cannot be deduced by its size, a new report suggests.
Writing in the Telegraph, Karen Krizanovich suggests that fiances are making a mistake if they think that selecting the largest rock will please their bride-to-be.
British women are looking for good-quality pieces such as asscher cut diamond rings or cushion shape diamond rings, Ruth Donaldson, the UK manager of Platinum Guild International, told the publication.
"Ladies like a better class of diamond and lean towards the best metals being used to secure their jewels. It is strongly felt by brides that their fiances are getting it wrong if they are just selecting the biggest rock," Ms Donaldson said.
But acquiring an engagement ring is still said to be an important dream for some girls, who associate brilliant cut diamond rings with the princesses from the storybooks of their youth.
A recent survey from Halifax indicated that Britain's homes contain £52 billion worth of diamond necklaces, gold bracelets and other forms of jewellery.
