Couples looking to signify commitment without saying 'I do' may wish to try a gold diamond necklace instead.

Jewellery designer Lana Fertelmeister's career took off when she wore a gold necklace emblazoned with her boyfriends name to let other men know she was committed, reports Business Week.

The idea of wearing a gold or diamond necklace to communicate relationship status was so popular, women stopped the designer in public to ask her about the piece, the report notes.

Fertelmeister first came up with the idea when she realised she wanted a way of signifying commitment to her partner, Rob Bramlette, without asking him to marry her.

So she crafted a necklace spelling out his name and wore it out as a statement of both fashion and love.

Meanwhile, Sue Rogers from Devon recently expressed commitment through jewellery in a whole different way.

The 45-year-old commissioned a gold diamond ring made from the ashes of her deceased cat, Sooty, in memory of the feline.
