New mothers are purchasing sophisticated designer jewellery tailored especially for them, a new report notes.

Despite carrying unfortunate connotations of cheesy "No 1 Mom" pendants, the genre of "mom jewellery" is gathering pace in Canada, according to the Canadian Press.

For example, one new celebrity jewellery trend spotted on Naomi Watts and Gwyneth Paltrow is a circular gold pendant inscribed with a lowercase 'mama', the report observes.

Such pieces reportedly represent how bespoke jewellery for mothers has made the journey from slightly unsophisticated to the height of cool.

Fortunoff spokesperson Arlene Putterman tells the news provider that charm bracelets and necklaces featuring inspirational terms like 'believe', 'love' and 'dream' are also popular with new mothers.
