Scottish police are searching for two women who stole a jewel-encrusted ring.

The pair, who are thought to be of middle-eastern origin, took the band from an Edinburgh jewellers, it may interest owners of gold diamond rings to learn.

After appearing to want to buy the £15,000 item, one of the women put it into her pocket and the duo calmly walked away as a shop assistant turned her back to begin the transaction.

In a statement a spokesman for the Lothian and Borders police commented: "This was a brazen high-value theft carried out by two women who are believed to have visited a number of shops in George Street yesterday afternoon."

He went on to appeal for anyone with information regarding the theft to come forward.

In other news on missing gold diamond rings, earlier this month a man was arrested on suspicion of taking a gemstone-encrusted band worth around $110,000 (£73,000) from an American jewellery outlet.
