Shopping for items such as gold diamond rings is "a hunt for treasure", it has been claimed.

Wired PR News has produced a guide for jewellery shoppers to ensure they get the best diamond for their money.

The source states consumers should familiarise themselves with the jewellery market prior to shopping in order to avoid "bling overload".

Comparisons of price, quality and service should be made, while the advice of friends and family is also key.

The website reminds consumers to always take into consideration cut, colour, clarity and carat of the jewels.

Meanwhile, certification should also be obtained when purchasing an item such as a pair of diamond stud earrings.

The source advises similar behaviour be taken when looking for coloured diamonds and states some coloured gems are "so rare they can cost thousands of dollars per carat".

Elsewhere, it has been claimed diamond rings symbolise "beauty, wealth and power".

The claim was made by Alice Sly, writing for 3X24 News Magazine, who added emerald-cut diamond rings are a good choice for an engagement band.
