The "J-Lo effect" has led to coloured diamonds becoming more valuable than white jewels, it has been claimed.

Sean Gilbertson, of mining group Gemfields Resources, made the statement in relation to the Hollywood star's array of coloured diamond jewellery boosting awareness and demand, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Meanwhile Brian Gilbertson, also of the mining group, told the newspaper: "Bond Street is full of wonderful displays of coloured gemstones".

Jerry Ehrenwald, chief executive officer of the International Gemological Institute, told Delawareonline.com the coloured stones have "always been around" but agreed with Mr Gilbertson on their popularity.

He added: "Demand has grown in the last decade as a result of Hollywood."

Coloured diamonds were also praised by MSN.co.uk earlier this week.

The website stated jewellery such as coloured diamond pendants and necklaces are becoming increasingly popular.

Demand for blue, black, yellow and brown gems, in items such as diamond stud earrings and rings, has increased in recent years, with celebrities such as Cameron Diaz and Carmen Electra seen sporting them, the source adds.ADNFCR-1633-ID-18760659-ADNFCR
