Brides and grooms-to-be have been advised to ensure they do not suffer heartbreak over the loss of a diamond engagement ring, by taking out insurance.

Research compiled by Confetti.co.uk found between 80 and 85 per cent of couples are not aware of available wedding insurance.

A policy can guard against potential costs incurred after the loss of items such as platinum diamond rings and wedding dresses.

Matt Salmon, group publishing director for You and Your Wedding Cosmopolitan Bride magazine, said his publication would "always encourage" purchasing cover.

He added: "Mind you, if they are buying products on credit cards they have a certain amount of insurance from those credit cards."

The research, which involved a survey of 1,500 brides-to-be, found outlay on platinum and gold diamond rings, used as engagement bands, is the third most expensive part of a wedding, with the average groom paying £1,412 for the item.

Earlier this month it was claimed by Wired PR News the search for gold or platinum diamond rings is "a hunt for treasure".ADNFCR-1633-ID-18779096-ADNFCR
