Northampton named 'bling capital of UK'
14th May 2008
People in Northampton like their jewellery more than anyone else in the country, according to new research. The average resident of this city, formerly famous for its shoe industry, wears £469 worth of gold, silver, platinum and diamonds, the Halifax study revealed. Only £1 behind, however, is Glasgow, and Wrexham residents pile on £460 of bling every day. A complete picture of the British Isles shows that collectively we own £52 billion in baubles that might include diamond bracelets, gold rings, off-the-tray and bespoke jewellery pieces. On a daily basis, Brits wear £8.6 billion and Halifax went as far as to warn people they should insure their items for their full amount and, if in doubt, get it valued. Senior claims manager Martyn Foulds said: "Our research shows that between us we Brits own a staggering amount of jewellery and enjoy making a statement by wearing valuable items when out and about." A recent survey by Money Expert revealed that £750 a year is spent on romantic gifts, including items of jewellery, with men spending more than women.
