Callas-inspired diamond necklace to feature on stamp
27th May 2008
A diamond necklace inspired by opera singer Maria Callas has been selected to appear on a new Belgian postage stamp.
Designed by Indian-born Canadian designer Reena Ahluwalia, the Bel Canto necklace has been selected to feature on one of a new five-stamp set by the Belgium Post and the Antwerp World Diamond Centre, reports JCK India.
"I am deeply honoured as this represents the highest recognition one can get as a diamond jewellery artist. This is beyond any aspiration. One does not create thinking that one day your work will be on a postage stamp," the designer said, commenting on the news.
Ahluwalia's work draws on geometric shapes and unusual styles to create works from pearls, gold and diamonds that would impress even people with little knowledge of jewellery, the publication suggests.
Honours that have been bestowed on the artist in the past include the Tahitian Pearl Trophy and the Gold Virtuosi Award.
Maria Callas was a Greek soprano born in America, famous for her work in operas by Puccini, Verdi and Bellini.
